September 4th

Tuesday September 4th, 1973
Limuru, Kenya
Well, today we took Alan to Kijabe boarding school.  We feel fortunate that we have been in Africa for 6 years before we had to let one go away.  It is only 20 miles out there, so that helps to know that I can get there if necessary.  He will be rooming with Mike Mason, Dirk Pearce, and another boy named Ramey.  When we left there, he was playing soccer and seemed happy enough.  We just hope that he will study and do well in school and remain firm in his faith in God.  Tonight Ken said, “It is going to be lonely around here without Alan.”

Alan and I both attended Rift Valley Academy.  He went in ’73 and I went in ’75.  True it is only 20 miles as the crow flies from Tigoni to Kijabe but this trip could take anywhere from 45 minutes to 2 hours depending on the road conditions.  Mom said she also had mixed feelings about sending me to R.V.A. those feelings were joy and happiness.

In reality Mom should have directed her petitions for blessings toward Alan’s roommates.

Alan went straight to the soccer field when he landed at Kijabe and that helped to pave the way for future success for him in college and later.

With a few notable exceptions Alan experience at R.V.A. stayed true to Mom’s hopes for him.

As the younger brother I probably voiced my feelings about Alan and his departure while I was tossing his stuff out of my “new” room.  There have to be some constants in this world besides death and taxes don’t there?

Well, who else could there possibly be? I seem to wear my whistle and referee shirt more at home than for UpWard Basketball these days.
